Spiking Neurons and Central Executive Control: The Origin of the 50-millisecond Cognitive Cycle
نویسنده
چکیده
A common feature of many cognitive architectures is a central executive control with a 50-millisecond cycle time. This system determines which action to perform next, based on the current context. We present the first model of this system using spiking neurons. Given the constraints of wellestablished neural time constants, a cycle time of 46.6 milliseconds emerges from our model. This assumes that the neurotransmitter used is GABA (with GABA-A receptors), the primary neurotransmitter for the basal ganglia, where this cognitive module is generally believed to be located.

Introduction: Executive functions refer to the use of cognitive processes to control thoughts and emotions. The purpose of this study was to compare the executive functions in premature and normal children. Methods: The present study is a causal comparative study. The statistical population of this study was Tabriz Premature Children that 30 of these children were selected by using available sa...
متن کاملDifferential Effects of the Lateral Hypothalamus Lesion as an Origin of Orexin and Blockade of Orexin-1 Receptor in the Orbitoftontal Cortex and Anterior Cingulate Cortex on Their Neuronal Activity
Several studies revealed that orexins may take part in the regulation of the different forms of affective and cognitive processes during wakefulness. The orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) as an important part of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) have a crucial role in cognitive processes such as reward and decision-making and has a high density of orexin receptor type 1 (...
متن کاملSymbolic Reasoning in Spiking Neurons: A Model of the Cortex/Basal Ganglia/Thalamus Loop
We present a model of symbol manipulation implemented using spiking neurons and closely tied to the anatomy of the cortex, basal ganglia, and thalamus. The model is a generalpurpose neural controller which plays a role analogous to a production system. Information stored in cortex is used by the basal ganglia as the basis for selecting between a set of inferences. When an inference rule is sele...
